"People grew up with it. It was a Berlin institution. Everyone who heard it took strength from it." Postwar Division of City RIAS was founded by the United States in 1946, when an occupied Berlin was divided into four sectors, each controlled by one of the Allied powers -- the United States, Britain, France and the Soviet Union. Its initials stood for Radio in the American Sector, although the East German authorities suggested RIAS stood for Revanchism, Intervention, Anti-Bolshevism and Sabotage.
