Though it would seem logical, sadly, that is not the case. Due to improved battlefield and near-battlefield healthcare, today's soldiers survive injuries that would have killed them in past wars. More of them are coming home with serious brain injuries and the like. Their care is going to cost a fortune for the rest of their lives.

Thus, the cost per soldier of caring for WWII vets, as an example, is only a fraction of what it will be for the veterans of our current wars.
