Headline: Compaq Chosen as Server Hardware Platform for Chevron's Global
Information Link Network

======================================================================
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1997--Compaq Computer
Corporation (NYSE:CPQ), the number one provider of Microsoft Windows
NT servers worldwide, today announced that Chevron (NYSE:CHV) will
run its Global Information Link (GIL) network -- one of the largest
deployments of its kind in the world -- on Compaq ProLiant server
platforms running Microsoft Windows NT. Compaq was selected over
several major competitors for the $20 million worldwide server
contract.
"We chose Compaq after a vigorous selection process which looked
at cost, system performance, and overall platform manageability," said
Dave Clementz, President of Chevron Information Technology Company.
Chevron will initially be deploying up to 400 servers in more
than 100 locations worldwide to support its GIL network, with further
additions being made during the next 18 months. The configuration will
encompass both Compaq ProLiant 2500 and ProLiant 5000 servers and
fully populated storage subsystems. Applications run on the Microsoft
Windows NT platform will include: Microsoft System Management Server
(SMS) network management software; Microsoft Exchange Server software;
Microsoft Domain Name Server (DNS) software; and a variety of
file/print and other applications.
"With this win, Compaq is demonstrating that it is capable of
listening to enterprise customers of all sizes and providing flexible
solutions that fit their exact needs," said John T. Rose, Compaq's
Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Enterprise Computing
Group. "The GIL project is critical to the success of Chevron's
business well into the next Millennium, and this type of project
endorses Compaq's ability to provide secure and reliable server
platforms to companies operating on a global scale."

Global Information Link

The purpose of Chevron's Global Information Link project is to
implement a worldwide computing infrastructure for the company based
on a common set of products and services. Chevron Information
Technology Company (CITC) will manage this common network computing
infrastructure for all Chevron companies worldwide, resulting in
greater infrastructure reliability and estimated cost savings of $50
million per year -- mainly through reduced support requirements and
overall lower total cost of ownership of all products on the network.
Having a common infrastructure for all Chevron companies will also
lead to greater adaptability of the company's technology to business
changes.

The Compaq ProLiant 2500 and 5000 Servers

The Compaq ProLiant 2500 server is targeted at departmental and
remote/branch office sites, which often lack on-site MIS support. It
supports up to two 200MHz Pentium Pro processors and is ideally suited
to handle departmental database, Internet or intranet applications.
The server ships with a built-in remote management feature, called
Integrated Remote Console, which provides continuous access to the
server from a centralized MIS location.
The Compaq ProLiant 5000 server delivers midrange systems
performance and capabilities at about half the cost of proprietary
systems. The server is ideal for intranet, Internet, database, data
warehousing, order processing and other transactions or
compute-intensive applications.
