I didn't think it was that clearly a display of an agenda. It was (imo) a display of stupidity- but they were just picking up on the stupid things that already happened to be fascinating the press (who in turn were trying to feed the apetite of the public).

I think if you look at the press through the prism of what they do when something rather non-political happens (think Princess Di's death)- you'll see they are equally shallow and stupid. I think, perhaps, the stupidity and lowest common denominator aspect to the whole thing can make things seem like there's an agenda- when it's really just stupidity and pandering to what the media thinks the country wants to hear (and usually does want to hear- because quite honestly, the "if it bleeds it leads" sells papers, and wordy erudite more balanced treatments of things, don't.)
