Forget the escalade, how about joe sixpack pickup truck. Consumer no way in hell can afford draconian solution you propose.

If Joe Sixpack get's a $3k annual rebate he can afford to buy a high mileage vehicle. True it might have to be phased in over a few years.

I think a summer respite is a good thing to spur the economy.

It contributes to our two worst problems. The loss in tax revenue goes straight to debt, further eroding the dollar, our wealth, and contributing to inflation. And it increases gasoline consumption, which puts more pressure on the supply demand curve and raises oil prices further.

By the way i listen to all the energy and global warming stuff and just have not seen a good way to transfer into public policy by either govt or private sector.

Listen to me... I'll tell ya.

A few years ago if we allowed drilling in anwar or offshore, built a couple of domestic refineres, started the switch to more econmic vehicles and renewable energy or just other type of energy we would not be suffering in this manner today.

Agreed. We should have kept on the efficiency kick that started with the oil embargo way back. ANWAR is 10 years before it produces, and with oil up 600% in 5 years I'm not sure that's a solution but we should probably figure a safe way to drill there.

And we're not even talking about the geopolitical security problems that our oil imports represent, or the fact that it's become half of our trade deficit, or that we are funding our enemies.

It's the number one issue in the US IMHO, it touches almost every other problem.
