Yes, very peaceful. Most house doors are still unlocked during the day, at least. Many are never locked. The gun owners, as a group, only care about hunting... I don't think I've ever heard one say he has a gun for personal protection and to protect his family. The crime rate is very low....low grade stuff, ie some burglaries, forgery, credit card theft, and very rarely murder. Murders, quite sensational at times, are usually within families or love triangles.... There is a lot of gambling but no casinos...just back room poker games in some of the bars....slot machines that appear and disappear depending on the expectation of a raid by the cops. Owners of the machines are always tipped off in advance... There is lot's of corruption, political and otherwise. Yes, the values are still the old fashioned ones. And the amazing thing is they accept all of this as their lot in life.
There are personality quirks also, eg you may have gone to school with a person all your life and know him very very well. But if by chance, you meet him again somewhere a few years later, he will most likely pretend he doesn't know you, or pretends not to see you. I have run into people I knew from my home town while working later on in another state.... They actually either walk right by me or pretended they didn't know me. ....it's a pet peeve I have with them. |
