Both Democrats are talking about fiscal responsibility

And good for them. Of course the Reps used to talk about that too and we can all see where that got us. But I'm always hopeful.

It seems to me your premise is wrong.

Now, which premise of mine is that supposed to disprove?

My only premises have been 1) that both parties have repeatedly shown disrespect for the state of the treasury and 2) that the chart about debt and the presidents was an exceedingly lame counter to the first premise.

As far as I can tell, the total cost of their new programs comes to less than $200 billion a year.

I don't think that either Dem has a plank about running a budget surplus. I don't watch the early details as carefully as most here so I could be mistaken. But even if they do, there's a huge space between plank and an actual surplus. History has long since taught me not to expect one. And recent history has sure taught the GOP rank and file not to expect one.
