One of my steadfast rules when I worked in public affairs was never to whine about the coverage we got. Some was always good, most in fact, and sometimes we got skewered by a lowlife editor.

The trick was to say we are bigger than that, we can take the occasional knock, but the best course is to stay on our high road and keep doing what we do as long as we believe it's right.

If I could, I would impose a blanket rule on all campaigns now that whining about the press is verboten. No more, period. Take your case to the voters and let them decide. Screw the pundits and their antics. They won't be why anyone wins or loses.

That's how a bold politician could start to rewrite the rules of the game. Just stay cool and on message. The rest will take care of itself if you are doing a good job.
