I also think that when someone circulates the rumor that America's elite supports Obama or that more educated people support him then others jump on that bandwagon.

They like to think of themselves in those terms and among that group.

We saw that phenom happen during the GOP rise when people wanted to consider themselves as affluent so they claimed to vote Republican. Maybe they were blue collar workers whose best interest was represented by the Dems, but they wanted to be associated with having more money so they registered and called themselves Republican.

Calling Obama an elitist is actually making it less desirable to be his supporter so it changes people's conception of themselves when associated with him.
