Where would you get the total deficit? I think the trend was positive through the last fiscal year.

I hold no brief for Bush's financial record. It was a disaster and Republicans are paying for it. The point is that ultimately it is spending. If you cut taxes you have to cut or at least restrain spending. You cannot cut taxes and implement new spending programs.

The mantra here has been the need to raise taxes. It is not the only way.
