"First off, thanks to Steve Harris, we know there are recorded statements of Hitler disavowing Christianity."

Actually, we don't. As I noted elsewhere, the English translation differs from the original notes.

You read the German?

"You can claim if you wish that he didn't act the way you belive a real socialist should have acted. "

Ok. Gotcha. Socialism is just a meaningless label.

If its just a meaningless label, why argue about it? Why the need to defend a meaningless label from association with Hitler?

"Note that in the latest post you and Ted are objecting to I don't even argue the issue of whether he was legitimately a socialist or not."

Ok, I will grant that I didn't notice you had shifted your position. I thought you were still arguing that he was a socialist because he claimed to be.

I think perhaps you have shifted your position. You don't now deny that Hitler called and considered himself a socialist.

I'm not concerned with whether he is a "real socialist" or a "pretend socialist". There are varieties of socialism. And arguments over who isn't legitimately socialist are rhetorical exercises by people who continue to revere some socialist ideal.

Not sure why you started this whole thread if that is the case. But...

I didn't. I think I got into the conversation when the defenders of socialism began calling Hitler a "devout Christian".
