As i remember learning it, before hitler was anything else he was an ultra nationalist and a racist. Communists were internationalists albeit using nationalism wherever and whenver they could. Hitler realized that with a depression raging that socialism is what the bulk of working and unemplyed folks believed in. So he took socialism and turned it on its head but appealed to german workers in both socialist and nationalist terms leaving the communists to sing the international while germans sang deutchland uber alles.
Of course when hitler attacked russia, he ran into stalin who coopted nationalism and managed to successfully fight off the nazis.
