Clearly the personal smears have more salience and "reality" for a huge part of the players out there. The fact that they compound our dysfunctional politics and the very institutions the public now holds in rank disapproval, has nothing to do with it.

Ergo those people get the government they deserve. It's likely that a President McCain would flounder much like GWB did before 9/11.
