So why do we not have the superior strategy? Isn't that what they teach in the War Colleges? Are we not getting our money's worth, or is there something else? Bingo - You nailed it. Until last year the War Colleges had not taught unconventional warfare, irregular warfare or counterinsurgency warfare in 20 years or more. The Command and General Staff College at Leavenworth maintained an elective block on UW and CI. 90+% of the officers who signed up for the course were SF. I believe that is still true today. Senior officers in the US Army have not been trained for what they are doing. Petraeus' attempt to write a manual confirms that. It is hard to win a game when it is your first time on the playing field and you don't know the rules.
