Elroy: "
You don't know how to back out of ethanol subsidies?

It's simple. You just shut them off.

Just because the government begins a welfare programme doesn't mean it always has to continue."

koan: Elroy, politics does not work that way. The farm lobby is very very powerful. You do not just shut it off.

When I said I do not know how we back out of it, I meant from a viable political point of view. The problem is similiar to the dems refusing to shut off funds for the Iraq war even though that was their only avenue to stop the war i.e. they felt it would endanger there chances in the next election.

Even thugh most people do not like the war, if the dems cut off funds for the war, the people would punish the dems in the next election. It is crazy, but every political pro in the country knows it is true.

In both cases the political fallout is just to large. It is sad. And what makes it sadder is that it is the people who make this political nonsense viable, because of the way they vote.

The best example is negative campaigning. People say they hate it, but it works because people vote according to it. You just saw a bit of it with Obama in Penn. Hillary really got down and dirty and she pulled out a pretty big win.

If any politician cuts farm subsidis (most of which are not based on real need) they will probably lose their congressional seats in the farm belt.

Same with cutting off funds for the war. Until the people wake up (I ma not holding my breath-lol)we will continue to live in an Alice in wonderland country.

It took the great depression to replace Hoover with FDR.
