for the most part there is a continuity in a nations foreign affairs over time. Mullahs taking over in the late 70s disturbed this and the revelations about US/Shah and US role in the overthrow of the pre-shah democractic regime fanned the flames. Iran terrorism kept it in the wrong direction and then 9/11 sort of brought some hope into US/Iran mix but that was replaced by silly axis of evil talk and the failure of reform movement within iran. Bush is leaving and ahmadijad should be a year behind. New pres' can resume attempts for at least some peaceful coexistance backed up by deterrence. We were in a similar place with breznev in the 80s and a decade later we had gorby and falling walls. One never knows so i stay hopeful about things.
