Mullahs taking over in the late 70s disturbed this and the revelations about US/Shah and US role in the overthrow of the pre-shah democractic regime fanned the flames. Iran terrorism kept it in the wrong direction and then 9/11 sort of brought some hope into US/Iran mix but that was replaced by silly axis of evil talk and the failure of reform movement within iran.

Iran and the US kissed and made up in the 1990s and were moving quickly towards normal relations, but then the Israeli lobby stepped in and vetoed that policy.
