a few yrs ago, a cardinal in CA boldly & irresponsibly directed his parish priests to ignore the immigration laws of the US. That act alone lost many long-established US Catholics. In the past, the Church urged it's members to respect US laws & customs--this recent flaunting of the law merely serves to lure more illegal aliens while distancing long-time citizens. In the end it's non-productive for the RCC and draws antipathy from millions of Americans.
