why are so many primaries scheduled on such late dates?

It's uncommon to have such a close race this far in. That's why FL and MI went for the early dates, to be "important". Normally the many states who go this late don't matter, and they suffer with that for years.

I'll keep beating the drum for my four monthly regional primaries, with the order rotated every time.

As for this particular race going on, they have reached the point where each can gain only by tearing the other down, which will hurt whoever runs in the fall. There are no big issue differences and the biographies are well-known. Now it's just about inane generalities and assumptions and spin, pundit-trash that tells us nothing except who can maneuver fastest and most ruthlessly to exploit any advantage.

And as I noted about Bush, winning a tough razor-thin election doesn't guarantee we will get a successful president. Just shows who plays the dirtiest games the best.
