SS benefits can certainly be cut but they can also be increased or kept the same. The benefits may be worth more in the future than people expect.

The risk of loss from 401Ks and IRAs is certainly much higher than losing SS benefits. Look at what has happened to private pension plans.

The private sector can over promise and fail to deliver even more easily than the government can.
