MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - Fitch Ratings said it sees growth in global PC shipments falling in 2008, but to stay within the upper single-digit range, in light of the weakened economic environment.

Shipment growth of laptops is likely to grow by more than 25 percent year-on-year in 2008, Fitch said.

Fitch believes the delayed procurement of PCs by both consumers and enterprises will come about in 2008 following the launch of Vista Service Pack 1 by Microsoft Corp. (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), while a possible moderation of PC shipments in the US is also likely to be more than offset by an increase in the rest of the world.

However, laptops will continue to be the key growth driver of PC demand in 2008 as consumers continue to be attracted by mobile platforms, Fitch said, while the desktop PC demand is likely to stay in the low single-digits in 2008 and 2009.

Also, the companies which can operate on a larger scale, or meet segmented demand, especially strong competency in the laptop market, such as Hewlett-Packard Co. (nyse: HPQ - news - people ), Acer Inc., ASUSTeK Computer Inc. and original design manufacturers (ODMs) like Quanta Computer Inc. and other major Taiwanese ODMs, will benefit from this trend.

Fitch expects low-priced, below $500 laptops, to effectively explore the potential demand from developing economies and less sophisticated computer users.
