"Obama presumes that states like Iran are amenable to reason."

I think it's quite clear the Iranian state is amenable to reason. They are a very clever government, and they are clearly quite logical. They have played the game in the ME far better than we have. We just spent billions carrying their water in Iraq. I would suggest to you that the illogical and unreasoning player in the ME right now is the US. Our stunning mistakes and lack of foresight have put us in a very poor position- both in the ME, and in terms of our ability to respond to threats elsewhere.

Even Saddam was amenable to reason if you understood his reasoning. You must always understand the basis for belief when you deal with people (which is why understanding and enemy is important and is not "excusing" them)- and sadly, at least twice, we made errors in evaluating his basis of belief- once during the invasion of Kuwait, and again when he bluffed about having WMD's- though some people in the intelligence community (and without it) at the time knew what he was doing.
