"How long did the occupation of Germany and Japan last?"

Quite a long time, and but it was relatively safe for soldiers to go out in public and mingle with the locals, at least in Germany, I don't know about Japan. Soldiers off duty in Iraq don't go wondering the streets of Baghdad unarmed like they often did in occupied germany. A US soldier off duty venturing out of the greenzone for a casual stroll puts his/her life in certain jeopardy.
The death toll fell after WWII ended, unlike in Iraq where it climbed dramatically and still remains high.
