Sigh, I'm gonna post about the View thread again, damn it. I just can't resist stuff like this:
When I was in Argentina last fall I watched TV where a woman and atheist was sworn in as president. The ceremonies were magnificent. How come a South American country is so more progressive than we are ? Aren't we supposed to be the sophisticated country ? Message 24529074
Yeah, darn it, why aren't we sophisticated enough to have an atheist woman President?
:-) Sophisticated is like "elite"- and you KNOW how people feel about elites. In the US we celebrate the mediocre. Isn't that nice? Message 24529080
Darn, there's another problem - "we celebrate the mediocre" instead of the sophisticated elites who know better than us.
I think it's shallowness.
Ah yes, in addition to celebrating "the mediocre", we're shallow, too.
Last night Moyers did an interview with a professor who talked about religion in America. She is a philosophy professor who was reared Episcopalian and is now by choice Jewish. She is also agnostic.
Moyers interviews a religiously confused agnostic philosophy professor. Wow, how sophisticated is that?
She made comparisons of how we use religion particularly Christianity in our politics, courts and just about every Government organization. Her position was how harmful it actually is.
She says religion, particularly Christianity, is harmful? Gosh, what a surprise. Who would have thought an agnostic philosophy professor would think that? But its a sophisticated opinion for sure. Thank God ... er....uh, Darwin, or whoever, oh, yeah, thank the great flying spaghetti monster (yuk, yuk), that we tax those ignorant clods out there to pay for sophisticated stuff like this.
The candidates rave about endorsements from various preachers and McCain choose to tout the one who recommended him. Trouble is that preacher said Katrina was caused by gays and lesbians going to have a parade in New Orleans.
Wright's sermon has been used to demonize Obama. He sat there for 21 years and listened to him and Hillary uses this too which I am upset about but the point is.... why bring where one goes to church. What one believes..into a political arena.
I think its fascinating that she asks why one should bring someone's religious beliefs into a political discussion IMMEDIATELY AFTER SHE HAD JUST DONE THE VERY SAME THING in regard to the preacher who backed McCain. Apparently a taste for progressive sophistication doesn't include a sense of introspection.
Cannot we not accept a person by his or her ideas on how to help America become a better country ? We know that some of the most religious persons use it as a cover for their own sexual peccadillo's..
When are we going to be a nation that keeps church and state truly separate. Madison wrestled with this question when he was in office. I would be all for it.
I'll bet that's what President Madison was doing every Sunday morning when he attended church services in the House of Representatives. He was wrestling with how to keep church and state truly separate. Sure.

Now why is it liberals have this problem with being perceived as elitists (or in this case perhaps, wannabe elitists) who view ordinary Americans with disdain? Gee, thats a question to ponder. What a mystery. Could it be a Karl Rove plot? Or perhaps it's our shallowness, our love of mediocrity or some other national character flaw? Or could it be liberals really are wannabe elitists who get a psychic boost from expressing disdain for the ordinary folks of their nation? Feeling superior to the shallow, mediocre clods (the hoi polloi in sophisticatese) makes one "special", you know.
And now, for any who think the above is "mean", what the hell is what those two are doing? At least I'm not mocking an entire country. |
