koan,

A couple of questions for you if you know the answers. How efficiently can coal be converted into oil? How much pollution does this process create? What will the treehuggers think of this solution? Will Al Gore take credit for thinking up this as well?

Cheers,

koan: I have no idea what the economics are of turning coal into oil, NG, gas, etc. I am simply saying that is the only viable "realistic" equation out there for the quantities needed going forward, so it will have to be done as best as everyone can do.

None of the other alternative energies is viable in relation to the quanitities of energy which will be needed by the world, or th etime frames involved.

And everyone will get on board when things get bad enough. If we do not build the necessary refinaries, then other countries will build them and the world will pay whatever the cost of gas is when the necessity to turn coal into oil becomes apparent and pressing.

We may end up exporting coal and importing gas, at whatever price, if people in the US will not be realistic ??

PS, regarding Al Gore, my personal opinion is that the US and the world would have been much better off with Al gore than Lil bush.
