Actually, the growth in China has come at a huge cost to the environment and, maybe, to the future of the country itself. I remember hearing there are some 80,000 political protests a year there. I don't know what causes the poisoned product problems but, unless the government regulates industries better, that would put a huge damper on future growth.

No, you either failed to notice where Afghanistan's 'growth' was coming from or you decided to ignore it. The reality is that when the Taliban went away, wheat farmers decided to plant opium.

I don't think that is progress, do you? It does bring in cash but there are better alternatives that would have been possible if Afghanistan actually had a functioning government.
