The worst of the crisis actually hit in 1992-1993, after the
rouble was floated and inflation was way above 100%. Salaries
did not keep up, and people had to grow their own food or
speculate in the government bond market, or hold dollars under
their mattresses. I was here. It was not livable there. The
only way to survive. The food was available, of course,
but at sky-high prices for most. Life savings of the
elderly (sometimes 10 or so annual salaries) were completely
wiped out by hyperinflation, and they were left to die from
hunger. Life expectancy dropped to 50 years. Organized crime
skyrocketed. One of my childhood friends was burned alive
in a car by gangsters, another handged himself.

And then the Russian president ordered the army and tanks to
shoot the Russian congress, but that's another story. -ggg-
