As for the weird harmonies in the Firebird, or the Rite of Spring, I know what you mean. The first time I heard the Rite (at 13) I didn't care for it at all.

Then I took a music appreciation class in my Freshman year of high school. The teacher started us out with Gregorian Chants, and we worked our way chronologically through musical history. Baroque, Rococo, Classical, Romantic, Impressionism, and so on. Each step of the way he pointed out what the composers were doing that was new.

By the time we got to the early twentieth century, I was completely ready for the dissonance, polytonality, and polyrhythms of Stravinsky. The Rite of Spring is one of my all time favorite pieces now. It doesn't weird me out in the least.
