NEW YORK, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Wall Street remained weaker in
early afternoon trading but several telecommunications stocks
were active amid reports that GTE Corp GTE.N was about to
make a bid for MCI Communications Corp MCIC.O.
"We are seeing a mixed reaction here. People are really
making speculative moves on this," said trader Paul Rich of BT
Brokerage.
The American Stock Exchange's index of telecomms shares was
up 3.70 points at 541.14 despite a weaker Dow and Nasdaq.
Trading in MCI and GTE Corp has been halted.
SBC Communications Inc SBC.N was trading at a 52-week
high of 65-1/16, up 1-2/16 on the day.
Ameritech Corp AIT.N was up 15/16 at 68-7/8, with
BellSouth Corp BLS.N up 13/16 at 48-7/16.
Bell Atlantic Corp BEL.N was up 1-15/16 at 82-3/16.
At 1400 EDT/1800 GMT the Dow was off 30.94 points at
8066.35.
The Nasdaq was off 11.22 points at 1721.57.
The long bond was 21/32 weaker to yield 6.41 percent.
