It's clear that ETSI was acting more as an anti-competitive cartel than a technical standards creating body aiming at creating the most efficient standard for the benefit of subscribers.

Belatedly they warned that price setting is not the brief of ETSI. But FRAND looms very large in the conceptual framework of ETSI.

In my oil industry days, I came to dislike standards bodies as a waste of time developing ineffectual products at great expense, reducing life to the lowest common denominator. That's not a universally applicable sentiment but it was all too often the case.

The W-CDMA rort was an example of a bad standard for the wrong reasons.
