Re: [1) If you can't run a deficit, then you can't spend money that you don't have.] "So you raise taxes instead,"

There are certainly logical and practical LIMITS to that. (Eventually a high enough tax burden - given that there is more and more international tax competition these days - would surely collapse the economy and thus *reduce* revenues to the government.) So, in the end, 'raising taxes' could not avoid the requirement for lowered spending.

Re: "... or you find creative ways around the restrictions,"

SUCH AS????????

(Remember: it's a CLEAR and certain constitutional mandate. Not NEARLY as much wiggle room as the state of affairs that exists now!)

Re: "...either way the spending continues."

I am certain that you are incorrect in that assessment.... (Perhaps you actually *don't want* the federal government to reduce it's spending? Perhaps you are concerned about just who's ox might get gored when Congress and the President come hard-up against a Constitutional change requiring that they balance budgets?)

Re: "Whatever structure you put in place, will be controlled by people. If the politicians don't support lower spending, and the people do, maybe some structure can block or slow the politicians."

We are SUPPOSED to be a nation ruled by LAW... and, our HIGHEST LAW (& most difficult to alter or 'get around') is the US Constitution.

If *that law* has no meaning any longer, then all hope is lost and we are well past the time for violent revolution to overthrow all the government. Is that the case? Or does our highest law yet have meaning?
