That's why he should have kept quiet about the NC ad. It did no good to publicly pit himself against the NC State party machine and lose, particularly over an ad that wasn't racist.

My personal belief is that people need to stand up for their First Amendment rights. It is nothing more than a tactic for the Obama forces to cry 'racism' any time legitimate criticism is aimed at their candidate.

McCain fell into that trap, did so in a public way, and made himself look both weak and rather silly, imo.

One needs to pick appropriate battles.

It's also a matter of knowing how to be the one to set the agenda, instead of getting sucked into an opponent's agenda.
