Today was interesting for me because I had been away for the entire school year from the piano, and was a little worried, but it all came right back with one day of practice for the 32 numbers. But I have no memory for anything at all. It's a real effort for me to memorize now, where in earlier days I could retain entire concertos.

I do think it's a skill like any other, and to remain competent you have to reinforce it on a regular basis or it just fades away. My playing is very sloppy these days due to arthritis and no discipline. (You probably did Czerny and Hanon daily also- ugh). What I was glad to find I retained was accompanying skills- which are different from just playing. You have to really feel the singer, follow them, anticipate them, leap if they skip measures, be sensitive to their interpretation, fake when they fake. It's a completely different challenge. And young kids require a whole lot of support. I love it. I love teenagers. I had a terrific time today with the kids.

WOW! I never COULD play the Fantasie Impromptu!
Those sixteenths against the triplets just would not come out right. You must have been really good, and so I bet it IS painful to see it gone.
Losses suck.
