Cheerios are better than corn chips or pop tarts. At least they don't have as much corn flour (although I think they have some)- corn being one of the grains most likely to put fat on- which is why it's been used as a fattener for animals.

Interesting little factoid. The diets of native peoples are often praised- but someone did some work on some of the old pueblo cultures that survived on corn- turns out most of them were diabetic.

While we do not live in a perfect world, the government food classification system is better than letting people buy sodas- sweetened or diet- candy, cookies and chips on the government nickel. Could you or I do a better job of devising what people should eat? Probably. But some effort is better than the no effort we get right now- ok, we don't let them buy alcohol and cigarettes with their food stamps- whoooohoooo. I think we can do a little better than that, even if the government doesn't do it perfectly.
