Prejudice is a human quality all of us share. It is perfectly normal to be able to identify more readily with people more like ourself. This does not mean though that we cannot have a sense of fairness to those who have differences from us.

If I were to say that I wouldn't prefer that my children marry within their own race and religion, it would be a lie. However, I would accept a decision contrary to my own regarding marriage as their own to make. I can even say that even in the extreme case of an interracial rape of my daughter that resulted in pregnancy, that I would prefer she did not have an abortion whether she kept the child or not.

I have had associations with blacks in the military, school, work, church, and my neighborhood. These associations have been overwhelmingly positive, but there remains a need to be sensitive to our differences. Again, this is perfectly normal and relates back to having a sense of fairness with those different from ourself.

In regard to Obama and Reverend Wright, both have expressed anger in their books and sermons related to race. I do not believe it is insignificant that both of these men are half black and white. This goes to a sense of identity and the nature of whiteness and blackness in American society with the desire of all of us to fit in.

The pitfall I see in such circumstances is the tendency to over compensate to be accepted within a group whatever that group might be. This phenomena is not restricted to only race either. The same thing arises with religious converts from the beliefs their parents held to prove their worth to those who might think them inferior and herein lies the concern for those who are not secure in their sense of identity.

Having said all of this, I believe people in large part are capable of the kind of self determination that is not to be found anywhere else in the animal kingdom. This trait is part of what makes us human and in a country such as ours, the ability to rise above our circumstances of birth.
