No, going from public to private has been quite easy except for Social Security. Trying to make the US health care system public will be a bloody fight because of the well connected people who make scads of money from denying health care to others.

There is much about the private sector that is awful. There are plenty of businesses that provide poor, dangerous, awful products and services that roll along merrily doing business.

It is a myth that either public or private is the way to go. It depends on which public and which private. There is good and bad in both.

Large organizations tend to grow. The reality of life is that the rock that gathers moss tends to gather more moss and more moss after that. Part of the function of government is to prevent this natural tendency from getting out of control and threatening life for all.
