beeb beeb Food Crisis In Central America Leading To Social Unrest, Ortega Warns

4/26/2008 10:44:30 PM Opening an emergency meeting on food crisis in Central America, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega warned that the food shortages have reached crisis levels and could explode into social unrest.

Addressing agriculture ministers of the region in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua on Saturday, Ortega said free trade, market forces, and farm subsidies in developed nations are contributing to the problem.

Ortega convened the meeting to take urgent measures in the face of a food crisis that is gripping the poverty-ridden Central America, which depends on imported oil and fertilizer to fuel its farms.

Ortega blamed international aid groups and the news media for not paying attention to the food crisis.
