Our mayor here in Anchorage is pushing hard for new energy-efficient street lights. The city has set up 3 test areas: 1 with LED lights, and 2 with induction lights. The goals are both to save electricity and greatly reduce the frequency of replacement. I have a hunch the induction lights will win, since they last for a decade or more. The plan is to select a winner this summer and phase them in all over town within 5 years.

All the lights being tested are a big improvement over the old high pressure sodium lights. They're white instead of amber, and produce less glare. Should make it easier to see those roaming bull moose on a dark fall night during the rutting season.
