No responsible pilot drinks before flying, nor would they smoke. THey have random drug tests anyway, and most pilots are very careful to stay within the rules. And a good surgeon wouldn't place patients at risk if he thought smoking or drinking would compromise his skills. You're conflating potsmoking with irresponsibility. I don't know many adults who smoke now- though I know a few- mostly because it's illegal, and they don't want to break laws. But those who do, are quite successful. The two I KNOW smoke- one is a business man, the other an engineer. Abusing marijuana, abusing alcohol, abusing suntanning. People make choices. What most of us are saying is that it's not in and of itself something that needs to be illegal anymore than alcohol. And it certainly should be available for medical usage.
