This is a strange kind of loss of confidence. It is the major western banks which have lost confidence in each other - to such an extent that they no longer dare to extend short-term loans or other funding to each other. This loss of confidence between banks has largely frozen the world credit system. But the real danger to the present global bank and financial system is if the general public loses their confidence in the safety of their deposits in banks and financial houses.

If bankers have lost confidence, why should anyone else have any?
