Ah, one more thing. I hope this helps put reforming public education back on the public policy agenda--not privatizing it via vouchers but getting to attention focused on what to do with public education particularly in the sectors of our society in which it has been failing for a good long time. Basically, inner cities and rural areas.

Well, I think you know my thoughts. Everything should be on the table....and the only metric should be what works. The Milwaukee longitudinal study didnt show much return for vouchers and if that continues, I hope that vouchers get taken off the table. OTOH, I would like to see some large scale studies on efforts to improving teacher quality like merit pay and removing low performing teachers.

Personally these pre-preschool programs sound promising. It makes intuitive sense that gains made when the brain is in its formative stage are the most likely to have a lasting impact. No doubt though that we are still in the early stages of proving out any specific programs. I certainly hope that whoever is the next President finds the money to expand the programs and testing. Both philosphically and as a practical matter, I think education reform should be a higher priority than universal health care. I know it isnt an either/or proposition, but as you say, many different priorities are fighting for money and I hope that education doesnt get lost in the current push towards expanding health care.

Of course, children dont vote....and seniors certainly do, so I guess I wont be surprised if education does remain below the national radar.
