Not all boats are gas guzzlers. If you don't mind going slow, you can get a boat with a small diesel in it and a full displacement or semi-displacement hull (non planing hull).

For sure, some boats will become impractical and some usage patterns (running out 30 miles and back to go fishing in a day) will become impractical, but other usage will still be doable (slowly cruising around the coast and maybe traveling 1-2 day of the weeks).

And of course their is always sailboats which not only have the full displacement hull, small diesel engines configuration, but also have the sails...
