boink Georgia Planning To Invade Abkhazia, Warns Russia

4/29/2008 3:02:32 PM Russia on Tuesday warned of a possible Georgian invasion of the break away region of Abkhazia.

The Russian Defense ministry said that that it would move additional troops to the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to offset what it calls as ”aggressive moves” by the Georgian military.

A statement issued by the Russian Foreign ministry on Tuesday said that "a bridgehead is being prepared for the start of military operations against Abkhazia", reported the BBC.

Georgian officials rejected the Russian allegation and called the Russian action provocative and unacceptable.

Russia has deployed about 3000 peacekeeping troops in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia ever since the regions sought closer ties with Russia after breaking away from Georgia in the 1990's.

Georgia accuses the Russians of supporting the separatists and has pledged to restore its control over both regions.
