Last week the maker of the Willie Horton ad released a new ad targeting Barack Obama.
John McCain tried to paint Democrats as the choice of Hamas.
A right-wing front group called 'Defense of Democracies' released an ad targeting specific House Democrats, claiming they had laid the country open to attack just because they had the patriotism and guts to stand up to the President's illegal wiretapping.

And we've all seen the "ad" the GOP is running in North Carolina which John McCain "denounces" but says he's helpless to stop. (And yes, the familiarity there is more than eerie.)
You know I've been through this before, and we learned the hard way how instantaneously and aggressively you have to act to stop smears dead in their tracks. Now, we can bemoan the areas we've fallen short doing this in the past, or we can fight back against every attempt by the right to smear Democrats. I've made my choice -- I'm committed to defending Democrats up and down the ballot -- and across the country -- against smears, and I'm dedicating my organization, Campaign For Our Country, to doing it. But I can't do it without your help.

Make no mistake - no matter who the nominee of our party is, the right-wing is going to go after Democrats with the most despicable smears you can imagine. It's only going to get worse. The right wing knows that Americans won't vote for John McCain and the rest of the GOP on the issues, so they are going to try to take the politics of Karl Rove to a new low, with a national campaign of fear and smear. We can't depend on others to filter out the lies and the smears, we need to do it ourselves.

We may not be able to line up the billionaire tycoons of the right-wing to fund a multitude of front-groups, but we have something better than that: we have you.
