It is the proper role of the U.S. Supreme Court to settle disputes amongst states that can't settle them in the lower courts. That is why they care, because the federal government is the arbitrator in state disputes. In fact, it is a much more relevant role for the U.S. Supreme Court than hearing a case about some obscure social issue, as they often do.

Liberty Island and Ellis Island have already been fought over in the U.S. Supreme Court, and New York won the claim to them, even though they are much closer to New Jersey, especially Ellis Island. The Delaware case was odd because Delaware controls most of the waters between New Jersey and Delaware, right up to very near the New Jersey coast. I think it was fair that the majority decision was in favor of Delaware. I was suspicious of why the two Jersey boys found a rationale to favor New Jersey in this case, when clearly Delaware has a legal right to the waters in dispute, as a result of agreements from years ago. Seems like legislating from the bench and ignoring past legal agreements that are in effect.
