On the heels of the coalbed methane industry, another, smaller industry is taking shape.

Extracting coalbed methane requires pumping out huge amounts of water. In the Powder River Basin, the amount of water that the industry could extract could fill Flaming Gorge Reservoir five times.

In some cases, the water is good enough to be pumped into drainages and streams or used for irrigating crops. But in many places, the water contains too much sodium for such uses.

Producers interested in staying in business for the long haul are taking a look at a variety of options for dealing with lower-quality water. The options can be as simple as a holding pond or spraying the water in a fine mist to promote evaporation. Or they can be more complex. One system lowers the pH of the water through a controlled combustion process, while another adds a resin to the water, allowing both the resin and excess sodium to be extracted.

No method is perfect, and all have their own costs. But as demand for coalbed methane grows, so will the interest in ways to treat the water associated with its development. The greater the incentive, the greater the investments in equipment, technology and research will be. The end result can be development of a natural resource in a way that concurrently manages to protect the land.

That sort of niche development is always welcome.
