'60 Minutes II' investigates CBM

GILLETTE -- Dan Rather and a crew from "60 Minutes II" visited northeast Wyoming to produce a report on coal-bed methane, how it's produced, and aspects such as the quality of water discharged from wells and its affect on the environment.

"It's not an all good side, all bad side. ... It's interesting and important," Rather said. "That's one definition of news to me."

The crew arrived in the Sheridan area Wednesday to film interviews and scenes that may appear in the CBS program, and continued filming in Gillette the following two days.

The segment likely will air in late September or early October.

"This story of the methane gas boom and the development of methane gas as a growing source of energy ... is pretty interesting," Rather told the Gillette News-Record during an interview in a Gillette hotel lobby.

Rather's father and grandfather worked in the oil fields and on gas pipelines. The newsman himself worked for a time as a roustabout.
