What you don't understand is that we weren't talking about reducing health care profits. We're talking about reducing health care expenses for the insured. To do that, the gov't should do exactly what corporations are doing.

As far as cutting the cost of health care for providers and physicians, there is a LOT that can be done. Right now, this industry is in the stone ages when it comes to technology for process automation. In addition, the way drugs are dispensed is highly irresponsible. We only treat symptoms; we don't use enough preventative care. We over-prescribe anti-biotics, which leads to the rapid evolution of new harmful bacteria, which we then have to find new drugs for.

We need to get smart. The system we have now encourages waste and duplication in the process. I am a business process consultant, specializing in Six Sigma, so I do this for a living, and I can tell you that they have a ways to go to build an efficient, cost-effective, process. If they focused on that, then they'd save money and increase profitability, which in part, could be passed on to the insured.
