Winbond to produce NOR flash on 90nm in 3Q08

Winbond Electronics will be the first memory foundry in Taiwan to move NOR flash production to 90nm production at a 12-inch fab. Production slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Driven to enlarge its market share, Winbond will move NOR flash production from 0.13-micron to 90nm at its 12-inch fab in the fourth quarter. The company will also start developing NOR flash production on 65nm in the same quarter.

Despite shipments declined on a sequential basis in the first quarter, Winbond said process technology improvement help maintain an upward trend for gross margins in the quarter. The company stressed that utilizing the latest process node for low-density NOR flash production will not conflict with either Numonyx or Spansion, or others who focus on low-density NOR flash production.

In related news, Winbond announced a net loss of NT$1.76 billion (US$57.8 million) in the first quarter, translating to a net loss per share of NT$0.48. The company plans to reduce its exposure to commodity DRAM production from 62% in the first quarter to 52% in the second quarter. It said it is conservative about DRAM pricing in the second quarter, and only expects a price rebound in the third.
