I live in NJ, which has the most aggressive rebate program for renewable energy installations in the US. NJ is seeking to have 20% clean energy by 2020. The rebates have been falling slowly since I had mine put in and the available applications for installation rebates get used up earlier every year. njcleanenergy.com

You need a south facing roof with no shade. I put in a 10K system back in March of 2005. They are Sharp panels @ about 170 watts per panel. Since 2005, the system has generated over 43 megawatts of electricity and saved the environment 24,000 kg of CO2. The panels' effective life is rated at 80% production after 25 years of service. They are meant to withstand 120 mph winds and 1 inch hail. The system is grid connected which means it can create a reserve of power with the local electric company in good sunny months especially. It also disconnects in the event of a power failure, so it goes down with it.

You can get a battery backup which adds considerable cost and maintenance to the system. The batteries siphon off 10% of the electricity production to charge them.
